How it works
Scientists have made a lot of progress in understanding how CBD produces its calming, pain-reducing, anti-inflammatory effects on the body - and there is still much more to learn. We know that CBD interacts with many different receptors, proteins, and other chemicals in the brain. These interactions create changes in the activity of neurotransmitters, hormones, and other cells throughout the brain and body. Through these interactions, CBD appears to be able to affect many of the body’s functions, from sleep-wake cycles and emotional regulation to inflammation, pain perception, and seizures.
Our bodies actually produce their own cannabinoids, as part of what’s known as the endocannabinoid system. This system is responsible for creating homeostasis, or internal balance in the body. It is involved in regulating many physiological processes including mood, pain perception, appetite, and cognitive functions. Since CBD is so similar to compounds that already occur inside the body, naturally they can interact with the cell receptors of the endocannabinoid system to produce a response. View FDA Disclosure.

Benefits of CBD
Scientists are devoting a great deal of attention to CBD these days, and we're continually learning more about the broad spectrum of benefits it may offer to health. Below are the ways CBD can benefit many ailments as well as physical and mental distress:
-
AcneThe effects of CBD on receptors in the immune system may help reduce overall inflammation in the body. In turn, CBD oil may offer benefits for acne management. A human study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation found that the CBD oil may help inhibit overactive oil production in sebaceous glands. These glands are responsible for producing sebum, a natural oily substance that hydrates the skin. Too much sebum, however, can lead to acne. One benefit of CBD over prescription medications is that it only targets the problem-causing cells, leaving healthy cells alone and reducing side-effects common to many acne medications, such as dry and irritated skin.

ADD/ADHDIndividuals with ADD or ADHD have difficulties with focus, attention and concentration, affecting their performance at workplaces and in classrooms. A study that was published in the Journal of Substance Use and Misuse in 2013 shows that some people have used CBD for self-medicating and it has helped in the management of impulsive and hyperactive behaviors. German research was published in 2015, studying the effect of CBD on 30 patients that did not respond to Ritalin or Adderall. A majority of these subjects experienced improvement in sleep and concentration as well as reduced impulsivity. Scientists have associated ADHD with clinical endocannabinoid deficiency, resulting in slowed down neurotransmitter speed, requiring the brain to need more time to focus and concentrate. It is thought that CBD brings control that enables patients to work, love and live without an intoxication feeling.
-
AddictionThere's promising evidence that CBD may be useful in treating substance use disorders, including addiction to opioids, cocaine, amphetamines, cannabis, and nicotine. One study demonstrated CBD could reduce the number of cigarettes consumed by smokers who were trying to quit, by 40 percent.

Anxiety and PTSDStudies using animal models of anxiety and involving healthy volunteers clearly suggest an anti-anxiolytic like effect of CBD. Cannabidiol has shown to reduce anxiety in patients with social anxiety disorder and researchers suggest that it may also be effective for panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, social anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. A 2011 study aimed to compare the effects of a simulation public speaking test on healthy control patients and treatment-native patients with social anxiety disorder. A total of 24 never-treated patients with social anxiety disorder were given either CBD or placebo 1.5 hours before the test. Researchers found that pretreatment with CBD significantly reduced anxiety, cognitive impairment and discomfort in their speech performance, and significantly decreased alertness in anticipation of their speech. The placebo group presented higher anxiety, cognitive impairment and discomfort

ArthritisDid you know that 34% of people over the age of 65 have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Arthritis of the knee alone affects over 250 million people worldwide, per Stephen Messier PHD, director of JB Snow Biomechanics Laboratory at Wake Forest University. These facts, however, are not completely accurate. These statistics only include those who are symptomatic with the disease. Unless you live in a vacuum, or you are under the age of about 15, you fall into the category of those who have osteoarthritis. You see, the very definition of osteoarthritis per Wikipedia is “a type of joint disease that results from the breakdown of joint cartilage and the underlining bone”. It is a disease related to wear and tear of the joint surface, which is a natural process of aging. The symptoms only occur once the cartilage in the joint is worn away to the point where the bone beneath it is exposed. Cartilage serves as a cushion between the bones, and it does not contain nerve tissue. Bone contains a vast amount of nerve tissue so when the bone is exposed, so are those nerves, and that is when you feel the effects of osteoarthritis (the pain, the stiffness, the decrease in function of the joint). Several factors are related to the timing of the onset of arthritis symptoms. The natural result of any injury near a joint is inflammation. Unfortunately, the body sees a surgery as an injury, and responds with the same swelling and inflammation. This adds to the erosion of the joint. Causes of symptomatic OA include over-use, obesity, heredity and culture. Inflammation is a direct result of the body’s perception of overuse. The inflammation itself eats away at the cartilage, causing an increase in erosion and thus earlier onset of symptoms. Inflammation is the body’s natural response to added and foreign stress on the body. CBD is a natural, and very effective anti-inflammatory which interrupts the progression of OA symptoms at the source, without the devastating side effects of the over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs on kidneys, liver and GI system. CBD reduces inflammation, thereby slowing the process of degeneration and the resultant symptoms of pain, swelling and immobility. Our cream provides relief locally, while the oils work more systemically.

Cardiovascular HealthA 2013 study published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology reports that CBD protects against the vascular damage caused by a high glucose environment, inflammation or the induction of type 2 diabetes in animal models. Although CBD is more popular for other health concerns, early animal research indicates that it may have multiple cardiovascular & heart health benefits. In particular, CBD shows promise of helping with elevated blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, atherosclerosis, and other heart issues such as stroke and cardiomyopathy. It may also help with diabetes-related heart issues and brain-specific cardiovascular concerns, such as reduced brain blood flow. Inflammation is known to play a role in cardiovascular disorders. CBD has been shown to decrease inflammation through activating the adenosine receptor and other mechanisms, leading to a reduction in levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Multiple studies demonstrate that CBD has vasodilating properties, meaning that it widens blood vessels. This effect can help reduce blood pressure and increase blood supply.

DepressionIt is commonly debated that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Scientists agree that levels of neurotransmitters (i.e. chemicals in our brain) are reduced during depression. Two of these affected by depression are serotonin and dopamine. CBD has the unique ability to directly interact with other cell receptors, including serotonin and dopamine receptors. Thus, when ingested, CBD influences brain activity and one byproduct is the release of serotonin and dopamine throughout the body. Researchers found “ample evidence that endocannabinoids are important regulators of stress responses. Thus is can be assumed that, during depression, plant cannabinoids such as CBD have the ability to regulate one’s response to stressful situations.

DiabetesA 2006 study found that CBD treatment significantly reduced the incidence of diabetes in non-obese diabetic mice from an incidence of 86 percent in non-treated mice to an incidence of 30 percent in CBD treated mice. CBD benefits also showed a significant reduction of plasma levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. A histological examination of the pancreatic islets of the CBD-treated mice revealed significantly reduced insulitis. In 2013, the American Journal of Medicine published a study that highlighted the impact of marijuana use on glucose, insulin and insulin resistance among U.S. adults. The researchers found that current marijuana use was associated with 16 percent lower fasting insulin levels. They also found significant associations between marijuana use and smaller waist circumferences, a factor connected to the onset of diabetes symptoms. The 2005 research paper from the American Alliance for Medical Cannabis (AAMC) lists numerous benefits that both CBD and cannabis can have for diabetes sufferers including: Stabilizing blood sugars Arterial anti-inflammatory properties “Neuroprotective” effects that help prevent inflammation of nerves and reduce the pain of neuropathy “Anti-spasmodic agents” help relieve muscle cramps and the pain of gastrointestinal (GI) disorders Acting as a “vasodilator” to help keep blood vessels open and improve circulation Lowering blood pressure — which is vital for diabetics Helping calm diabetic “restless leg syndrome” (RLS)

Epilepsy, Seizures and Neurological Disorders"One of the most promising uses for CBD is as a treatment for epilepsy. Scientists have recognized for many years the anti-seizure capabilities of CBD. Recently, CBD has been shown effective in people whose epileptic seizures are resistant to other treatments. A 2014 survey conducted by researchers at Stanford University was presented to parents belonging to a Facebook group dedicated to sharing information about the use of cannabidiol-enriched cannabis to treat their child's seizures. Nineteen responses met the inclusion criteria for the study: a diagnosis of epilepsy and current use of CBD enriched cannabis. The average number of anti-epileptic drugs tried before using CBD cannabis was 12. Sixteen (84 percent) of the 19 parents reported a reduction in their child's seizure frequency while taking CBD cannabis. Of these, two (11 percent) reported complete seizure freedom, eight (42 percent) reported a greater than 80 percent reduction in seizure frequency, and six (32 percent) reported a 25-60 percent seizure reduction. Other beneficial effects included increased alertness, better mood and improved sleep; while side effects included drowsiness and fatigue. Later in 2014, researchers reported on preliminary results of a study involving children with treatment-resistant epilepsies in an expanded access "compassionate use program." Patients received a purified 98 percent oil based CBD extract called Epidiolex, which is made by GW Pharmaceuticals. After 3 months of treatment, 39 percent of the 23 patients had more than a 50 percent reduction in seizures, with a 32 percent median reduction

Insomnia and Sleep QualityCBD has the potential to reduce anxiety, which can be helpful in reducing sleep difficulties, improving sleep quality and increasing sleep duration. CBD has been shown to reduce insomnia in people who suffer from chronic pain as well. In smaller doses, CBD stimulates alertness and reduces daytime sleepiness, which is important for daytime performance and for the strength and consistency of the sleep-wake cycle. CBD may help reduce REM behavior disorder especially in people with Parkinson's disease and PTSD. REM behavior disorder is a condition that causes people to act out physically during dreaming and REM sleep. Typically during REM, the body is largely paralyzed, a state known as REM atonia. This immobilization keeps sleepers from reacting physically to their dreams. In REM behavior disorder, this paralysis doesn't occur, leaving people free to move, which can lead to disruptive sleep and to injuring themselves or their sleeping partners.

Multi-Drug Resistant BacteriaResearchers discovered that cannabinoids have an unusual ability to destroy bacteria (especially drug resistant strains). More research is needed to find out how and why it works. Whatever the mechanism is for destroying bacteria, CBD seems to be a potent weapon against the antibiotic resistant “superbugs” that are becoming more and more of a problem today.

Multiple SclerosisMultiple sclerosis (MS) is an acquired chronic immune-mediated inflammatory condition of the central nervous system (CNS), affecting both the brain and spinal cord. It affects approximately 100,000 people in the UK. It is the most common cause of serious physical disability in adults of working age. The cause of MS is unknown. It is believed that an abnormal immune response to environmental triggers in people who are genetically predisposed, results in immune-mediated acute, and then chronic inflammation. The initial phase of inflammation is followed by a phase of progressive degeneration of the affected cells in the nervous system. MS is a potentially highly disabling disorder with considerable personal, social and economic consequences. People with MS live for many years after diagnosis with significant impact on their ability to work, as well as an adverse and often highly debilitating effect on their quality of life and that of their families. Research findings suggest that CBD could slow the neurodegeneration process of MS. Studies have found that cannabinoids are involved in the regulation of the immune system by acting upon cannabinoid receptors of the endocannabinoid system to modulate the inflammatory reaction and assist in neurodegeneration. Additionally, CBD has been found to help with the symptoms of MS including pain, muscle stiffness and muscle spasms, along with reduction of sleep disturbances.

NauseaCannabis has been used for centuries for the suppression of nausea and vomiting. Research has revealed that among more than 80 cannabinoid compounds found in marijuana, both the intoxicant THC and the non-intoxicant CBD helps to get rid of nausea and vomiting in animal studies. A 2012 study published in the British Journal of Pharmacology found that CBO benefits including possessing anti-nausea and antiemetic effects when it was administered to rats. Researchers found that CBD acts in a diphasic manner, meaning that in low doses it suppresses toxin-induced vomiting, but in high doses it increases nausea or has no effect.

Neuroprotection and Neurodegenerative DiseaseCBD is showing real promise as a compound that can contribute to protecting the brain, thanks to its anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory abilities. Scientists are investigating its role in neurogenesis and its ability to help the brain heal from injury, and as a treatment for neurodegenerative disease. Research suggests that CBD may help to reduce brain damage from stroke or other neurological injury. CBD is increasingly looked to as a possible therapy for several neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and multiple sclerosis as well.

Pain and InflammationAmong common CBD benefits, natural pain relief tops the list for many. Evidence suggests that cannabinoids may prove useful in pain modulation by inhibiting neuronal transmission in pain pathways. A 2012 study published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine found that CBD significantly suppressed chronic inflammatory and neuropathic pain in rodents without causing analgesic tolerance. Researchers suggest that CBD and other nonpsychoactive components of marijuana may represent a novel class of therapeutic agents for the treatment of chronic pain. According to a 2007 meta-analysis conducted in Canada, the combination of CBD and THC buccal spray was found to be effective in treating neuropathic pain in multiple sclerosis, which can be debilitating for 50 to 70 percent of MS patients. The effects of CBD oil on your brain’s receptors may also help you manage pain. Studies have shown that cannabis can offer some benefits when taken after chemotherapy treatments. Other pre-clinical studies sponsored by the National Institutes of Health are also looking at the role of cannabis in relieving symptoms caused by: Arthritis Chronic pain MS pain Muscle pain Spinal cord injuries

Parkinson's DiseaseParkinson’s disease is a progressive movement disease. This horrible disease affects around one million people in the United States. The current cause is unknown. However, vital nerve cell death in the brain, associated with dopamine, leads to the disease. This cell death causes loss of control over movements and aggressive tremors. The current treatment for this disease is heavy pharmaceuticals. These have been shown to improve the patients but are not healthy to take long-term. In a federal funded research study posted in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, CBD use for Parkinson’s disease was evaluated. Exactly 42 patients were involved in the study. The study was performed as a double-blind study. That means, 21 patients received CBD, while the other 21 patients received a placebo. Neither group knew which received what. The group that was given CBD was given 300mgs a day for eight weeks. The results were absolutely amazing. The group who received the placebo reported no changes. However, the group who received CBD reported immense changes. All 21 patients had an extraordinary increase in their quality of life and ability to function during the day. Although tremors were still present, they were reduced. Many reported their tremors to be around 50% less severe than before they started CBD treatment. They also reported a much more elevated-mood and desire to do things their disease held them back from before.

Weight ControlCannabidiol can help maintain healthy blood sugar, and stimulates genes and proteins that help break down fat and increase mitochondria that helps burn calories. CBD also encourages the body to convert white fat to brown fat. White fat is the kind of fat we typically think of when we think about body fat. Brown fat is said to improve health by enhancing the body’s ability to burn white fat, create heat and even regulate blood sugar.
